18 U.S.C. § 2257 Exemption Statement
Last updated: August 3, 2026
This statement explains why the record-keeping requirements of 18 U.S.C. § 2257 and 28 C.F.R. Part 75 do not apply to the material listed on Hanime.
1. The material is animated
Everything catalogued on this site is animated or illustrated Japanese adult animation. It consists of drawings, paintings, cartoons and computer-generated imagery. It does not depict actual human beings.
The record-keeping obligations in 18 U.S.C. § 2257 apply to visual depictions of actual human beings engaged in actual sexually explicit conduct. Because no real performer appears in any of the works listed here, there are no performers whose ages could be verified and no records of the kind § 2257 requires. The material is therefore exempt.
2. This site hosts no media
Hanime is a catalogue. It stores titles, synopses, tags, release dates and cover artwork so that works can be searched and browsed. It does not host, stream, upload or store video files, and it does not produce any of the works it lists.
Cover artwork shown on this site is served from third-party sources and is displayed for identification and reference. Where any such image is subject to a § 2257 obligation, that obligation rests with the producer of the underlying work rather than with this site.
3. All depicted characters are adults
The works listed here are fictional. Every character depicted in sexually explicit conduct is intended by its producer to be an adult, regardless of how that character may be styled or described within the fiction.
We do not knowingly list any work that is unlawful in its country of origin. If you believe a listed work is unlawful, tell us using the details below and we will review it and remove the listing where appropriate.

Concerns about a specific listing, including copyright complaints, should go to [email protected]. Copyright complaints are handled under our DMCA policy.
